On 2nd December 2022 the European Commission initiated a review of its steel safeguard measure applicable to imports of certain steel products, to determine whether the measure should be terminated by 30th June 2023, one year earlier than the previously foreseen date (30th June 2024).

The review was already foreseen in the ‘Prolongation Regulation’ which extended the original safeguard measure in June 2021.

EU producers and users of steel have been invited to fill in surveys and submit relevant data by 13th January 2023.

The surveys are downloadable at https://tron.trade.ec.europa.eu/investigations/case-view?caseId=2645

CEMA had already teamed up with other downstream steel users to oppose the safeguard measures both before its launch and on the occasion of its extension in 2021.

Following this investigation with stakeholders, the European Commission will make a proposal by the 30th of June 2023 on whether the steel safeguard measure should be terminated. EU Member States will then vote on the proposal.
