In the light of a rapid world population growth within the next decades, energy demand will grow significantly – especially in emerging markets. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, about 9 billion people will live on earth in 2050. Shortage and rising prices for fossil fuels as a corollary of the boom in demand make the application of biogenic energy sources indispensable. Moreover, political goals like the liberation from oil dependence and climate protection play an important role for a successful reduction of CO2 emissions worldwide.
