CEMA – EUROPEAN COMMITTEE OF ASSOCIATIONS OF MANUFACTURERS OF AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY
HISTORY (GENERAL INFORMATION)
| CEMA was founded on 16 April 1959 in Stresa (Italy), shortly after the signature of the Rome Treaty, which created the European Community. Eight national associations of manufacturers of farm machinery, among which some - such as the British association – not participating then in the Community, attended the Constitutive Assembly. The register is kept by SYGMA which has been entrusted with the Secretariat General since the creation of CEMA. Afterwards other countries joined CEMA. The twelve member countries of the Committee are the following : France, Germany, UK, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Finland, Spain, and Portugal. The list of member associations with their addresses and other details are to be found in this web site.
CEMA brings together 12 national associations active in the field of agricultural machinery, which represent approximately 4,500 production sites of industrial standing with nearly 270,000 people employees and a total turnover of over 19 billion Euro.

PURPOSE of the COMMITTEE
The purpose of the Committee is :
- To consider all problems which interest the agricultural machinery and related industries, particularly technical and economic problems ;
- To take into consideration all steps likely to develop the industries in question and safeguard their common and international interests ;
- To collect, exchange and distribute all information related to these matters ;
- To promote friendly competition between producers, and to eliminate all difficulties which might oppose progressive improvement of the European commercial regulations of the industries concerned.
 |
The reference to « related industries » is quite recent : it is based on the request of several member associations which have amended their by-laws in order to represent, besides agricultural tractors and machines, outdoor power equipment, forestry and municipal equipment.
CEMA has decided to include these Industry sectors in order to be able to answer various requests without however trespassing on the sphere of activity of other European organizations dealing specifically with this type of equipment. Co-operation with these other organizations is encouraged and joint positions have already been established.
